Talk to Strangers

A few years ago, I was about to look for another company to work for. Then one day, I received a job offer from a big multinational company and on that same day I was invited by a start up company to attend a seminar in the evening.

I attended that seminar and while waiting before the seminar to start, I seated in a vacant chair with a guy seated beside. I initiated a conversation with him and we found some common ground. After some stories shared with each other, I learned from him a job vacancy that totally fit my qualifications, have better opportunities and I just submitted my resume. And yes, to cut the story short, I was hired in that company.

Why you need to talk to strangers?

Growing up, we were told not to talk to strangers, but now that we are grown up it is an opportunity to learn an to build a network by talking to strangers.

How to talk to other people:

There will always be something to learn from other people. That is why it is always better to ask questions and listen most of the time rather than talking too much. The person who asks the questions controls the conversation. Plus, you can build more rapport and influence more when you let other people talk more because it is a way of showing your genuine interest to them.

Rule of thumb:

The other people should be speaking twice as much as you speak. You will be surprised at what you will learn and people that they can introduce to you.
